A theoretical grammar that underlies all human languages. The pursuit of discovering UG is a major driving force in linguistics today. A likely candidate for UG is, for example, a rule that all languages must have consonants and vowels . A rule not in UG is that you must repeat the first syllable in a sentence three times.
